Az élővizek szennyezése globális probléma, melyeknek három fő összetevője van: az olaj szennyezés, a légköri ülepedés, mely leginkább az óceánokat szennyezi, és a szilárd szennyezők. A tengerekbe jutó hulladék nagy része műanyagokból áll, amik az állatokat sem kímélik káros hatásuktól. A le nem bomló szennyeződések egy része kisodródik a partra, másik része szemétszigetet alkot, melyre egy hollandiai non-profit szervezet új felszámolási technológiát fejlesztett ki.

Pollution of living water is a global problem with three main polluters. These include oil pollution and atmospheric sedimentation, which mostly pollutes the oceans, and solid pollutants. Most marine litter consists of plastics, which does not spare animals from their harmful effects. Some of the non-decomposing pollutants drift to shore, while the other parts form a garbage island, for which a non-profit organization from the Netherlands is developing a new eradication technology.
